Ara Institute of Canterbury International Engineering College, Shenyang Jianzhu University (the College), jointly run by Shenyang Jianzhu University (SJZU) and Te Pūkenga - Ara Institute of Canterbury (Ara) has recently been officially approved by the Ministry of Education of China as a non-independent legal person Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school on April 22nd, 2023, and its school-running license number is MOE21NZA02DNR20232364N.
The College is the first Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school of Shenyang Jianzhu University, and the first Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school established in China with support after the merger of Te Pūkenga, which is directly under the Ministry of Education of New Zealand. It is also the first Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school established by a New Zealand university in Liaoning Province and the first Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run school for “Big Data” in the three northeastern provinces. It is a practical measure to comply with the deepening of China - New Zealand education relations and the expansion of cooperation. The establishment of the College is an important measure taken by SJZU to serve the national strategies of the “14th Five-Year Plan” for digital China, a powerful nation of education, and high-level education opening up, as well as the regional economic development strategies of digital Liaoning, an educationally powerful province, and three-year action for new breakthroughs in northeast revitalization. It is also a significant breakthrough and landmark achievement for SJZU to continuously promote its internationalization strategy and build an internationally renowned and domestic first-class university of architecture.
The College will offer three undergraduate programs: Data Science and Big Data Technology, Information Technology, and Quantity Surveying. Its total enrolment scale is 1000 students, with an annual enrolment of 250 students. The enrolment of the College shall be included in the national enrolment plan for ordinary higher education institutions in China, and the first intake of students will be enrolled in 2023.
The College integrates advantages and characteristics of Shenyang Jianzhu University and Te Pūkenga-Ara Institute of Canterbury, adopting a “4+0” or “3+1” operation mode. Students who completed their required studies at SJZU and meet the requirements for degree awarding can obtain both the graduation and bachelor’s degree certificates from Shenyang Jianzhu University and the corresponding bachelor’s degree certificates from Te Pūkenga-Ara Institute of Canterbury. The College shall also establish a variety of exchange and scholarship programs to provide students with opportunities for cross-border learning and exchange. Excellent students shall have opportunities to directly study for master’s and doctoral degrees in New Zealand.
The College shall take moral education and talent cultivation as its fundamental task, guided by high-quality construction. Drawing on the cultivation of students’ innovative practical ability and advanced educational concepts of Te Pūkenga-Ara Institute of Canterbury, it shall systematically introduce courses and quality evaluation methods of Ara, integrate the disciplinary advantages, educational characteristics, and high-quality faculties of both sides, adopt an international teaching model, and cultivate innovative interdisciplinary talents who master big data analysis technology with international vision, cross-cultural communication ability and a strong sense of social mission, to serve regional economic development and national digital security strategy.
